History of Trailers
Film trailers were used as early as 1913 when Nils Granlund advertised "The Pleasure Seekers" which was a theater performance at Winter Gardens. Advertisements became more common in the 1930's when Walt Disney used them to advertise Snow White. Another film called "Gone With The Wind" used trailers to attract their audience. These trailers usually consisted of a voice over trying to convince the audience to coma and see the film. Film trailers have advanced since then instead of long scenes from the film they use Jump cuts such as the ones seen in "Dr Strangelove" in the 1960's, this had text and many scenes from the film. This has progressed to the trailers we see today that have jump cuts, music over the scenes and some speech from the film.

Magazine Cover Analysis
This is the front cover of Total film. The image is of the main character in Star Trek, relatively unknown in the acting world. His face is the main image in blck and white makes it seem old, like the old Star Trek. There is an element of broodiness in his features.
The Department
I think this poster is good at looking dramatic, the film it self is dratic and tense. The three main actors in this film had to appear on the poster as they are all as big as eachother. Their faces appear quite artistically in the lettering. The dark back ground contrasts with the light lettering.
Poster Analysis
This is the new Batman film The Dark Knight Rises released in 2012. I think this is a good poster as it is a Gothic theme in keeping with the recognisable darkness of the Batman. It's effective in building excitment for its release, it does not give anything away of the story but gives us the sense of chaos with the buildings falling down.
